VASCO: Fisherwomen from Vasco fish market shed said the illegal sale of fish by roadside is continuing without fear, despite assurances given by the authorities.
On Friday, they met Mormugao Municipal Council Councillor Fredrick Henriques and Vasco Police Inspector Nilesh Rane to complain against this illegal fish sale by the roadside.
PI Rane assured the fisherwomen to act on such cases. He also asked the fisherwomen to send a picture of people illegally selling fish at roadside for quick action from the side of police.
During an altercation between the MMC councillor and Vasco Police Inspector, the fisherwomen said the promises given to them by the MMC councillors were hollow. They said that the police had promised to take strict action against the illegal fish vendors and now they ‘want us to help them by sending pictures of the illegal vendors by the roadside’.
The fisherwomen also warned councillor Henriques that they would not leave the fish market shed until the illegal fish selling at roadside outside the market shed doesn’t stop.
After giving a patient hearing to the grievances of the retail fish vendors, Councillor Henriques informed them that the MMC and Vasco Police have jointly worked in acting against the illegal fish vendors sitting at the roadside. And shortly illegal fish vendors will not be seen selling fish by the roadside, he promised.
PI Rane, present at the spot, informed fish vendors that his police staff has closed down many illegal vendors who were selling fish by the roadside. Rane also urged fisherwomen not to have a false impression that no action has been taken in this issue.
Later, on a concluding note, Councillor Henriques explained to the fisherwomen that MMC will soon come up with a tentative shed for the retail fish vendors.
“MMC needs cooperation from the fish vendors as the new fish market complex will give better facilities and proper place for the fish vendors,” Henriques said.
