MARGAO: Unauthorised hawkers occupying the streets of Margao have caused an uproar among citizens, who are now demanding action against the illegal bazaar that has been set up in the heart of the commercial town. In a complaint filed with the Margao Police on Thursday, citizens expressed their concerns and requested immediate action.

According to Navin Pai Raikar, these hawkers, situated right beside the Margao Municipal building, are creating a nuisance for the public as well as for the shopkeepers who are running legitimate businesses in the New Market area. “These hawkers have been occupying the streets of Margao without any legal permission. They are selling their products on the footpaths and creating a hindrance for pedestrians. They are also picking up fights among themselves, which is causing a disturbance to the residents and road-users,” he stated.

The situation is worsening

as several dozen migrant

hawkers can be seen here mostly during morning hours and late evenings.

These hawkers, who have not paid any taxes to the local authority, are causing losses to the public exchequer.

Furthermore, the local shopkeepers are bearing the brunt of these illegal activities as the hawkers are selling similar products at much lower prices, thereby affecting the local business community, he added.

Raikar has demanded that the police take strict action against these hawkers and ensure that the streets of Margao are free from illegal activities.
