MAPUSA: A successful operation conducted by Porvorim police resulted in the apprehension of 12 individuals involved in an illegal online cricket betting racket. The raid, carried out on Thursday at Hotel Mantry led to the confiscation of valuable items including laptops, mobile phones, and routers worth approximately Rs 2,00,000.
The raid was initiated based on a tip from a reliable source, alerting authorities to the existence of an illegal online cricket betting operation. The illicit activity was centred around accepting bets from the public during an ongoing T20 cricket match between New Zealand and UAE.
During the operation, a dozen individuals were apprehended in the act of accepting bets, clearly caught red-handed.
Among those taken into custody were Sanjay Subba, a resident of New Delhi; Karan Rajesh Patil and Amit More from Akola, Maharashtra; Ankit Kumar from Dhanbad, Jharkhand; Ritesh Jaiswal from Delhi, and Naveen Batra, Varinder Singh, Suraj Nagdev, Kishan Poptani, Tilesh Kumar Kurrey, Shrey Sharma and Ashish Mantry from different parts of Chhattisgarh. An FIR has been registered under Sections 3 and 4 of The Goa Daman & Diu Public Gambling Act, 1976.
The raid was conducted under the supervision of SP North Nidhin Valsan and SDPO Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe by a team comprising Porvorim PI Sachin Yadav, Vikas, PSI Pratik Bhatprabhu, constables Yogesh Shinde, Mahadev Naik, Utkarsh Dessai and Nitesh Gaude
