Margao: Macazana residents on Wednesday stopped sand extraction activity in the village and prevented two trucks from transporting the material.
The residents of Muxim in Macazana in a letter addressed to the panchayat, police and Cuncolim MLA have complained of having learnt from reliable sources that some persons with vested interests are yet again planning to start illegal sand mining in River Zuari at Muxim Macazana.

For that purpose, these persons have brought an unregistered 200-mt canoe and have anchored it in the inland waters at Muxim.
“In the past, we, the residents of Muxim ward had strongly objected to the illegal sand transportation through the ward. It was creating environmental pollution and there was a constant fear of injuries/deaths due to rash driving by the truck drivers. The narrow road leading to Muxim is not suitable for the movement of heavy vehicles as the road at some points has a maximum width of only 2 metres, blind curves and slopes at 65° angle”, they stated.
The residents of Muxim, Macazana have requested the above authorities to immediately intervene and stop the illegal work. The residents have also urged the panchayat, which they say, has the right and authority to stop all illegal works in its jurisdiction.
