PERNEM: Illegal structures on Ashwem, Mandrem and Morjim beaches were demolished on Sunday.
The demolition team consisted of Pernem Deputy Collector Chandrakant Shetkar, Mamlatdar Anant Malik, Joint Mamlatdar Gautami Parmekar, Police Inspector Tushar Lotlikar and other officials.
The order to demolish illegal structures constructed on turtle nesting zone and violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone norms was issued by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority.
At around 9 am, the team began with the drive with the protection of strong police force. However, some constructions survived this action after the owners produced documents.
The owner of Por Do Soul resort failed to demolish the structure within the given time and this resort was demolished on Sunday. The resort had illegal swimming pools and had carried out major concrete construction.
Ashwem, Mandrem and Morjim are declared as eco-sensitive for tortoise conservation and there are around 170 such constructions on this stretch built in violation of the CRZ norms.
