MAPUSA: The GOACAN on Friday stated that illegal and unregistered nurseries were mushrooming in Bardez Taluka.

The NGO in a reminder letter to Zonal Agriculture Officer, Collector North and Goa Police highlighted that illegal and unregistered nurseries were selling fruit and flower bearing saplings, which are operating in Bardez Taluka.
The GOACAN stated that these nurseries which sell both fruit and flower bearing saplings are clearly a problem for the consumers who approach them to purchase saplings etc, in good faith thereby exposing themselves to issues of diseased saplings, fake seedlings, fake fertilisers etc, and these issues which come within the purview of the Consumer Protection Act 2019 would eventually result in litigation which could definitely be avoided if preventive steps are taken in time.
The NGO stated that Directorate of Agriculture, Panjim under the Goa Fruit and Ornamental Plant Nurseries (Regulation) Act 1995 had issued a public notice to all the registered plant nurseries via advert, directing to display signboards and stop using hand carts for the sale of plants within 15 days which they failed to do. Therefore, if these illegal and unregistered nurseries continue to operate despite the above mentioned facts, then consumers will have no option but to take all legal steps to ensure their protection in Bardez Taluka which could eventually result in litigation.
The GOACAN stated that the office has the mandate to remove the illegal and unregistered nurseries operating in the jurisdiction of Bardez Taluka by taking the assistance of the police inspectors of the concerned police stations and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in charge of the area.
