Following strong protests by locals of Varca over the alleged illegal excavation of sand at Tamborim, authorities have begun moving the sand back to its original site. The action comes after residents raised concerns about sand from the Tamborim CRZ area being unlawfully dumped in Fatrade, Varca.
The Talathi of Cavelossim and Varca inspected the concerned locations and directed that the excavated sand be returned to the original property. Youth activist Shohail Furtado said that on January 23, locals noticed the illegal dumping and immediately flagged the issue with the authorities.
“From the moment this was highlighted, we raised the issue and followed it up relentlessly until it reached its conclusive end,” Furtado said, describing the outcome as a demonstration of the real power of the locals, particularly the youth.
Residents expressed gratitude to Zalor–Tamborim panch member Rinku Lobo and Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz for their support in ensuring timely action and protecting the coastal environment.
