PANJIM: Warning of extreme weather conditions with very heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory has advised tourists not to visit the coastal State till October 27.
Goa was on red alert on Thursday with heavy to very heavy showers received due to cyclonic depression in Arabian Sea. The normal life was disturbed as State received around 90mm rainfall for the day with reports of water logging at several places across the State.
IMD Goa Director Dr Krishnamurty Padgalwar informed the media that tourists are advised not to visit Goa for four days from October 24 to 27 due to extreme bad weather conditions.
He said the people are also advised to abstain from outdoor activities and fishermen against venturing into the sea during the period.
Padgalwar said the latest satellite imageries and Ship & Buoy observations indicate that the Well Marked Low Pressure Area has intensified into a depression over east central Arabian Sea and lay centred.
“It is very likely to intensify further into a deep depression during next 12 hours and into a cyclonic storm during subsequent 12 hours,” he said.
It is very likely to move east-north-eastwards till October 25 evening. Then it is very likely to re-curve and move nearly westwards to south Oman and adjoining Yemen coast with gradual intensification during subsequent 72 hours.
“In view of formation of depression and its movement towards east-north-east direction, extremely heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the State. Tourists are advised to avoid coming to the State during this period,” he said.
Padgalwar said the sea conditions are also going to be rough and hence tourists, who are already along coastal belt, are directed not to venture into the sea.
The State recorded 144 percent surplus post monsoon rains from October 1 till date. It has received total 343.5mm of rainfall as against the average 141.0mm.
