PANJIM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday has officially confirmed that the South Western monsoon has withdrawn from the State of Goa. According to the MET Department, the monsoon season across the State was satisfactory.
Speaking to Herald, MET official said, “The monsoon in Goa has officially withdrawn but for statistical purpose the season is ended on September 30. IMD only considers four-month season. The season was satisfactory and the deficit was within the normal range.”
“The basic reason for the less rainfall this year was that in the month of July, the State received 25 percent less rainfall and this is due to less activeness of the offshore trough which generally continues for many days off the west coast of Maharashtra to Kerala” he said.
However, the late arrival of the monsoon and scarce rainfall has left the State with a deficit of 14 percent in the average seasonal rainfall for the period from June 1 to September 30. As per data with IMD, Goa received 100.6 inches of rainfall in this period against the average of 116.9 inches.
