IMD ISSUES ORANGE ALERT UNTIL AUG 9

PANJIM: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Goa until August 9 with the warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places across the State.
In a press statement issued by the IMD, Goa centre, the department has informed that heavy to very heavy rainfall at a many places is very likely to occur over North Goa and South Goa on August 6. Heavy rainfall at a few places with very heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely to occur in North Goa and South Goa during subsequent three days.
The orange alert issued by IMD Goa means very heavy rainfall between 115 to 200 millimetres is expected in 24 hours and recommends the authorities to be prepared. IMD Goa official stated that due to a monsoonal weather system called “offshore trough”, the monsoon wind speed has enhanced over Goa and off coast it will be 45-55 at kmph gusting to 65 kmph and hence fishermen are advised not to venture into sea. While on land the wind speed of 20-25 knots is expected along with the rains.
During the 24 hours between 8.30 am on Sunday and 8.30 am on Monday, Old Goa and Sanquelim recorded the highest rainfall of 15 cms, while Valpoi received 14 cms of rainfall. Panjim, Mormugao and Sanguem received 13 cms each while Dabolim and Quepem recorded 12 cms each and Canacona received 10 cms and Mapusa, Margao and Ponda recorded 9 cms each.
