PANJIM: A Delhi-based businessman was duped to the tune of Rs 1 lakh by an imposter, who posed himself as Mahesh Gaonkar, Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch).
While the mobile phone number through which Gagandeep Singh Sehgal received the call identifies the caller as ‘Mahesh Gaonkar Superintendent’ on Truecaller, the officer in fact retired on April 30, 2022, and does not hold this number. As per the complaint, a copy of which was accessed by the Herald, Singh was asked by the caller to pay him Rs 1 lakh over a property at Parra. The complainant claimed he was threatened into making the payment which he did so to a person by the name of Suraj near the Vagator petrol pump.
