PONDA: The Ponda locals on Sunday urged the State government to improve the accident prone roads and highways in the city before implementing the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 in January next year.
“The government should also know that dangerous roads are also inviting fatal accidents and not all deaths are due to traffic rule violations,” said the locals.
Hanumanth Naik and Gurudas Naik said, “As per the statement of Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, the new fines would be implemented at the end of December and by January law would be implemented with suitable fines.”
“Recently the government assured to repair the potholed-ridden roads in Goa, but that is not sufficient because there are so many internal roads, middle district roads and bypass highways with accident prone zones and sharp turns which should be improvised and made safe to save the lives of the drivers and commuters,” Hanumanth said.
According to Gurudas, sharp turn of 90 degree on Dhavali-Farmagudi steep slope constructed on national highway flyover near Bandodkar football ground become a death trap as no security measures have been taken even after five accidents taking place at the same spot. Now after five accidents including one recent fatal accident of crane driver who fell from seven metres flyover along with the crane, there is a growing demand from people to straighten the sharp curve.
Ponda MLA Ravi Naik visited this sharp turn and had raised voice against it from time to time and demanded to improve the flyover or close it for traffic considering safety of vehicles as it becomes difficult to negotiate the sharp turn at the time ascending and also during descending from it.
The Ponda-Belgaum Highway NH 4 is also become dangerous near KTC Bus Stand.
