PANJIM: In 2014, there were 472 police officials undergoing departmental action, while First Information Reports (FIR) had been registered against 38, according to statistics released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
While the report mentions the figures for 2014, Goa Police officials say the total could include those men-in-khaki against whom complaints were filed in the previous years.
Records further state that 172 personnel were awarded minor punishments summarily while inquiries against 60 are at different stages and 80 cases were either withdrawn or disposed. In the previous year there had been 38 FIRs registered against police personnel, 13 were chargesheeted and sent for trial.
The data also reveals that until the end of 2014, there were 56 departmental inquiries against police officials of various ranks pending, and in two cases, charges were not proven. Statistics further show that 36 police personnel were arrested.
The statistics, however, need to be verified as the State records show other figures. However, no police officer was available to comment on the authenticity of the records. Last year, the State police had disputed some facts for the year 2013, calling the statistics ‘unrealistic for a small State of Goa’.
