MARGAO: Asserting that tiatrists have played a major role in protecting the State’s identity and Konkani language, Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado, on Saturday promised all government help and assistance to the Tiatr Academy of Goa to take tiatr to greater heights.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at an award distribution function held by the TAG vis-à-vis the 4th popular Tiatr festival at the Ravindra Bhavan here this evening, Avertano said tiatrists have fought for both Konkani language as well as statehood. He also remembered the tiatrists of yesteryears for their rich contribution to tiatr and for their movement to get official status recognition for Konkani language. “Tiatrists play an important role in society. There are allegations that tiatrists criticize the political lot. But, I feel that if politicians don’t fear God, at least they will fear the tiatrists,” he said in a lighter vein.

The Fisheries Minister promised Tiatr Academy of Goa to take up their host of demands before the government for redressal.

TAG President Prince Jacob disclosed plans of the Academy to have its own building, with an auditorium, conference hall and other facilities. “The plan will be placed before the coming meeting of the Academy. Once it is passed, the proposal will be forwarded to the government,” he added.
