In three weeks, MMC collects Rs 52 lakh in outstanding taxes

MARGAO:  Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar announced that the recovery team of the civic body has recovered a little over Rs 52 lakh in outstanding taxes in three weeks’ time.

Shirodkar, while congratulating the team headed by an official named Bhagat, said the teams were traveling to various shops as well as tracking down people who are living abroad, who owe dues to the municipality. The Chairperson said that after taking over, he had held meetings with section heads and plugged various areas where MMC was either losing money or not earning enough revenue.

He further added that the recovery team discovered that there are many shops that are operating without trade licenses. He however added that in some cases, there are legal disputes, for which he said MMC is seeking a legal opinion.

The Chairperson added that they are taking action against those who are operating shops in areas without permissions or in garages of buildings and that he will head that inspection team.

He also said MMC is being considerate, given how shopkeepers suffered during the pandemic and so some relaxation is being provided as to how they can pay back their dues.

Shirodkar stated that his second biggest priority was Sonsoddo and that besides the fortnightly review meeting at the site, a special MMC team inspects the dumpsite thrice a week. He said by March, the issues at the Sonsoddo garbage dump will be sorted. He also brushed aside various allegations about the way the garbage management is taking place.
