MARGAO: The Romi Konknni protagonists have threatened to launch an agitation if the Government fails to include Romi Konknni in the official language Act.
Menino Fernandes, Edward Terry, Clifton Fernandes, Francis De Tuem, Tousif De Navelim and others addressed a press conference wherein they have placed their demands.
“We had a meeting at Lohia Maidan and served a deadline to include the Romi Language in the Official Language Act as we are opposed to Marathi. We want only Konkani in Romi script and not Devanagari,” they said. “If the Government fails to fulfil our demands, we will hold a mass agitation,” warned Clifton Fernandes. “We were cheated in 1989 as we Catholics were not in favour of Devanagari as it is not our mother tongue,” Francis De Tuem alleged.
“We want grants for Romi writers as no grants are provided for Romi literature. The Dalgado Konknni Academy has failed to do anything for Konkani,” they alleged. “Four days have passed and 10 days remain. If our demands are not met we will hold mass agitation and corner meetings in villages” said Tousif De Navelim.
