Incomplete ferry ramp endangers commuters on Camurlim-Tuem route

SIOLIM: The repair work in progress of Camurlim ferry ramp over the last one year is causing hindrance to the ferry services on the Camurlim-Tuem waterway. The ferry service on this waterway has been operational for the past many years and has resulted in easing increasing traffic on the road.

Considering the large number of vehicles being ferried across the river, the work to widen and repair the ferry ramp on Camurlim side was undertaken a year ago. However, the work came to a halt after four months and for the past eight months, it has come to a standstill.

Bamboos have been fixed into concrete at the mouth of the ramp which is causing hindrance to the the ferry-boats while docking. This could also damage the propeller of the boat while reversing the machine. This is the only ferry service on the route and could cause great inconvenience to locals if it comes to a halt due to damage to the ferry boat.

The contract of this ramp repair work was given to the Public Works Department by the Captain of Ports Department and River Navigation Department at an estimated cost was Rs 20 lakh. Both the departments have given 50% of the amount to PWD but the work is yet to resume.
