Increase in universities led to drop in ranking: GU

University sets up internal quality assurance cell to analyse reasons for slipping in the ranking framework

PANJIM: Following the drop in its ranking by National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF), Goa University (GU) on Thursday said that the university has set up an IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) to analyse the reasons for drop in rank from 64th last year to 68th this year in the National Institutional Framework Ranking (NIRF) 2018.
In 2017, the GU had witnessed a massive drop in ranking going from 20th in the first NIRF ranking in 2016 to 64th. GU last year also said that the ranking criteria adopted by the agency were in favour of big universities.
Speaking to Herald, GU Registrar Y V Reddy said, “The University will set up IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) to analyse the reasons for drop in rank from 64th last year to 68th this year in the NIRF 2018 ranking. Every year the number of institutions is rising. As these numbers go up, the rank of the smaller universities will drop down.”
The institutions are ranked by NIRF based on five broad parameters – teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practices (RPC), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI) and perception (PR). The five parameters with a ranking weightage given to each are then used to arrive at an overall ranking for the institutions.
As per the assessment GU scored 59.83 under TLR (100), RPC 13.77, GO 66.09, OI-51.58 and perception 2.0. The maximum score a university can get is 100 and institutions are then ranked accordingly and GU has scored 40.6.
NIRF in 2016, had four categories namely universities, engineering, management and pharmacy while this year for the first time, medical, dental, architecture and law colleges were also ranked under NIRF.
Even during the past ranking wherein 19 universities ranked above GU, about 15 were supported by the Central government at a level much higher than what is available to a state university like GU.
