MARGAO: Terming the present fine of Rs 200 for traffic violation as too meager, Goa police on Friday said that an increase in the fine amount to Rs 500 will act as a deterrent and bring in traffic discipline amongst motorists.
Interacting with the media after flagging off a rally of students in the city here to coincide with the ongoing Traffic Safety Week, Superintendent of Police, Vijai Singh, however, said that the state government has no proposal to increase the fine amount, even as he said that the Centre too has no plans in this regard.
“The fine of Rs 200 is too meager. It proves to be less deterrent. I feel that it should be minimum Rs 500. It would not only ensure deterrence, but bring discipline amongst violators,” he added.
On a question, he said the department also instructs its officers and personnel to comply with traffic rules.
