VASCO: The Independence Day was celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm across Mormugao taluka on Tuesday.
Various educational institutions and organizations, Vasco civic body, government offices, hospitals and police stations, Central government agencies as well as panchayat’s across the Mormugao taluka also celebrated Independence Day with great enthusiasm and fervour.
A taluka level celebration was held at Tilak Maidan in Vasco where Deputy Collector Mahadev Arondekar unfurled the national flag. It was followed by a march past and several cultural activities by students from different schools. Parents as well as other citizens who were invited as audience to the event were spellbound by the performance.
Addressing the gathering, Arondekar urged the participants not to consider Independence Day as yet another holiday meant for leisure activities. He insisted the day must be used as an occasion to recall the supreme sacrifice made by thousands of freedom fighters who did not expect anything in return. The main highlight of his speech was when he appealed to the citizens not to purchase any china made products.
“Everyone present here must be aware of the situation that currently prevails on Indian borders. Our Army is very well protecting our borders due to which we all Indians are able to sleep peacefully. If required we as citizens should also be ready to take on enemies of the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, On the occasion Independence Day, Mormugao Municipal Council felicitated all former chairpersons for their contributions to the port town. They were felicitated by South Goa MP Narendra Savoikar in presence of Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and other MMC Councillors as well as Chief Officer Deepali Naik.
Meanwhile, 38 students of Makhdoom Saani Madrasa situated on the top floors of Madina Masjid in the heart of Vasco city also celebrated the Independence Day.
Special lecture on importance of Independence was delivered and sweets were distributed. With the initiatives of President Shaikh Maqsood of Madina Masjid, the school was draped in tricolour for the last two years. The Masjid being in the heart of the city, gives a festive look to the area.

Guardian Ang el school holds events
CURCHOREM: The Guardian Angel Educational Complex, Curchorem consisting of Guardian Angel Pre-Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary School and Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology celebrated the Independence Day by organizing various programmes on the occasion.
The National Flag was unfurled by Chief Guest Fr Joaquim Rebello, Principal of IHMCT, Curchorem in the presence of Principal Fr Walter Miranda, Headmaster Fr Jerry Vaz, Assistant Headmistress Nutan Rege, staff and students.
To mark the occasion, students presented a skit convey the message that no one should hesitate to carry on their traditional occupation and also dances and patriotic songs.

El- Shaddai holds patriotic singing

MARGAO: The El- Shaddai, an NGO, celebrated Independence Day at the Lohia Maidan.
Various competitions like patriotic singing, painting, dancing, quiz related to Independence and others were held for the children. Over 300 students, parents and teachers came for the celebration.
El-Shaddai has been holding these celebrations every year. Margao Town Police Inspector C L Patil was the chief guest for the function and inaugurated the celebration. Speaking to the children at the function, he said, “It is very important to learn and learn well in life because in the future education will be everything.”
The Anjuman Islahum Muslameen School of Davorlim sang a patriotic song which set the mood for the evening followed by various other activities.

South collector recounts achievements since Independence, honours freedom fighters

MARGAO: “On this day we have to look back the dreams we saw and dreams we achieved in the course of time. It is a day when we have to look back how many dreams we have seen and the dreams we have achieved and how far these dreams have been realised,” said Anjali Sehrerawat, IAS, speaking after hoisting the national flag at the Matanhy Saldanha District collector office on Tuesday.
TCP & Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai, SP South Arvind Gawas and others were present at the ceremony.
“The free and fair election in one of the largest democracy of the world gives us a sense of pride and importance of having achieved the feat,” she said.
Lauding GST, Collector Anjali said, “The GST has been a successful step and a path breaking attempt to unite people, strengthening and uniting the market make the budding nation stronger.”
“Enhancing the digital mode of transactions will be another move towards the achievement of freedom of struggle,” she added.
“We are all the stakeholders of Vasudaiva Kutumbakam which is one nation one family and have to keep striving to achieve its goals,” she said.
Meanwhile, the collector honoured the freedom fighters who laid down their lives in the freedom struggle.
Meanwhile, the lifeguards of Drishti Lifesaving, that man Goa’s 105 km coastline celebrated the 70th Independence Day of India along with beach goers at Goa’s popular beaches, Calangute and Colva.
The celebrations began with the hoisting of the tri-colour flag at the lifeguard towers, followed by singing of the National Anthem. Demonstrations on lifesaving techniques and CPR were given by the lifeguarding team to people assembled at the venue. A session on general awareness with regards to beach safety and the do’s and don’ts was held for swimmers and beach goers, at the beach. The general public were also given a session on keeping the beaches clean, highlighting one of the main points, that is, to avoid drinking while at the beach. The program concluded with planting of trees in association with the panchayat followed by distribution of sweets.
The flag was hoisted by ex-serviceman P N Pandey, General Manager, Operations Drishti at Calangute and ex-serviceman Prem Singh, HR Manager, Drishti at Colva.
Drishti Lifesaving provides professional lifeguard services on behalf of the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa along the coastline of Goa. Over 700 trained lifeguards provide dedicated service across the beach stretch of Goa and internal water bodies of Dudsagar and Mayem Lake.

Kavlekar hoists flag at home to celebrate the Day
BETUL: Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar unfurled the National Flag to commemorate Independence Day at his Betul residence in the presence of Quepem Municipal Council Chairperson Raul Pereira, Vice Chairperson Paulo Fernandes, Councillors, Zilla members, sarpanch, panch members and some permanent members from Quepem constituency.
Earlier in the morning, Kavlekar attended the main Independence Day function held at the old secretariat in Panjim.
