MARGAO: Former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Justice (Retd) Gurudas D Kamat has said there is no more justification for an Independent High Court for Goa and everyone should now look forward for addition of Judges and improving the standard.
He was addressing a function organised by the Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, Margao held to felicitate its ex-student, Justice Anuja Prabhudessai following her appointment as Judge of the Bombay High Court.
“There was once a craze that Goa should have an independent and separate high court. Over the last 30 years since the Goa Bench of the Bombay High court was set up in Goa, as many as 12 Goans have become High Court Judges. That meet our standards. Out of the 16 Judges, there are now four sitting Judges. It is a good going. I find no justification now for the Independent high court of Goa”, he said.
While complimenting Justice Anuja Prabhudesai, Justice Kamat said she has a good future and exuded confidence that she would one day go to the Supreme Court as its Judge.
In her brief reply, Justice Anuja Prabhudesai thanked her teachers, senior and junior lawyers, College professors and gave a piece of advice to the budding law students. “Nothing is easy in life and nothing is impossible,” she said, while advising the students to make the most of the facilities.
“This is one institution wherein everyone looks on as the last hope and a last guardian. People have reposed their faith in this institution and that’s what give us the strength to face the challenges”, she added.
Earlier, Vidya Vikas Mandal President Ganesh M Daivajna, vice-president Nitin Kunkolienkar and Law College Principal Arun S Nadkarni also spoke.
