India committed to tackle climate change: Guv

VASCO: The Government of India is committed to find solutions for overcoming the challenges posed by climate change, governor of Goa P S Sreedharan Pillai said here on Thursday.

“We are now heading the G-20 countries. We are taking the environment issues very seriously. Already our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated India’s G-20 motto as One Earth, One Family, One Future. This clearly suggests our common future and the importance of dealing impact of climate variation and the associated challenges. It is the policy of Government of India to look for solutions to overcome the challenges posed like climate changes,” the Governor said.

Speaking at the Antarctica Day celebrations at the National Center for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), the governor said that institutions like NCPOR are working hard on studying the impact of environment issues in polar regions and surrounding oceans.

“The Government of India is giving more and more importance to environment research to combat climate change issues,” Governor said.

On the occasion, the India Post, Goa released a special cover, a customised corporate ‘My Stamp’ commemorating 10 years of Bharati research station at Antarctica, Special Cover with Special cancellation and a special booklet on the Aurora australis.

“We have an excellent relationship with NCPOR and have been collaborating with them on bringing out a lot of Antarctic related materials which have a great philatelic value,” Sayeed Rashid, Post Master General – Goa Region, said.

The Postmaster General also said that India posts has a post office at by three research station in Antarctica and it is in the process of opening a post office at Bharati research station.
