India’s biodiversity has received a significant boost with the addition of 709 new animal species and 353 plant taxa to the country’s official records in 2025, further cementing its position as one of the world’s most biodiverse nations. The latest findings were announced by Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav in Kolkata on Tuesday.
According to the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), the newly updated faunal database includes 483 species that are completely new to science, along with 226 species recorded in India for the first time. With these additions, India’s total documented faunal diversity has reached 1,05,953 species.
The Botanical Survey of India (BSI) also expanded the country’s floral records by adding 353 taxa, including 14 infraspecific taxa. The discoveries are the result of extensive field surveys, taxonomic research and scientific documentation conducted across forests, wetlands, coastal regions, mountains and other ecosystems.
Among the states, Kerala recorded the highest number of new animal discoveries, contributing 98 species to the national database. Arunachal Pradesh emerged as the leading state for species new to science, with researchers identifying 49 previously unknown species, highlighting the ecological importance of the biodiversity-rich northeastern region.
Officials said the discoveries underscore India’s continued efforts to document and conserve its vast natural heritage. Scientists believe accurate species identification is crucial for strengthening conservation programmes, monitoring ecosystem health and protecting endangered habitats.
The surveys carried out by ZSI and BSI also provide valuable insights into India’s rich wildlife and plant diversity, helping policymakers develop informed strategies for environmental protection. Researchers noted that many remote and unexplored regions are still likely to harbour species yet to be discovered.
The latest additions reaffirm India’s status as a global biodiversity hotspot and highlight the importance of sustained scientific research and conservation initiatives to preserve the country’s unique ecological wealth for future generations.
