In a historic and triumphant achievement, Indian para-athletes left an indelible mark on Saturday at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, as they celebrated their 100th medal. Dilip Mahadu Gavit emerged as the star of the day, securing a coveted gold medal in the Men’s 400m T47 event. Gavit’s extraordinary performance was highlighted by a remarkable run time of 49.48 seconds, clinching the prestigious gold.
This momentous accomplishment comes on the heels of India’s groundbreaking achievement on Thursday, where they surpassed their previous best-ever medal count from the 2018 Jakarta Games. The Indian contingent has now amassed an impressive medal tally, boasting 29 gold, 31 silver, and 51 bronze medals, reaching an outstanding total of 111 medals.
The significance of this achievement was acknowledged and celebrated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed his admiration for the para-athletes’ incredible success. In a post on Twitter, the PM said, “100 MEDALS at the Asian Para Games! A moment of unparalleled joy. This success is a result of the sheer talent, hard work, and determination of our athletes. This remarkable milestone fills our hearts with immense pride. I extend my deepest appreciation and gratitude to our incredible athletes, coaches, and the entire support system working with them. These triumphs inspire us all and serve as a reminder that nothing is impossible for our youth.”
