The investigation concluded that Karbotkar killed Bengre due to previous enmity and to end his supremacy in Colvale jail. Karbotkar has been charged under Sections 302, 332, 353 & 201 of the Indian Penal Code.
Crime Branch has been unable to trace the clothes worn by the accused and the weapon used in the crime. However, the case relies on witness evidence and CCTV footage where Karbotkar is seen committing the murder.
The investigation reveals that Karbotkar also stabbed a jail guard on duty who had rushed to help Bengre from the attack.
Bengre was killed in Colvale jail on July 26, 2016. He had been brought to Goa from Punjab where he had been arrested for smuggling drugs. Karbotkar had also been brought from Nasik Central Jail to appear in Mapusa court. Both were wanted in a series of cases in Goa and in the neighbouring states.
The charge sheet mentions the negligent approach of the staff of the Colvale jail which helped the accused to conceal crucial evidence of his clothes and knife.
Crime Branch has submitted 40 statements of witnesses, including 10 statements which were recorded under Section 164 CrPc.
