Ecopro Environmental Services (EES), an Indore based consultant, gave a presentation on a segregation project for the Margao municipal councillors and the solid waste management Committee on Monday. The company gave a presentation on bio-mining, which has been accepted by the MMC provided it gets another landfill site.
EES, which has been appointed by the Goa State Urban Development Authority and the Goa State Pollution Control Board, will treat the garbage dump at Sonsoddo through segregation and disposal of inert waste. The company has already measured the scale of the dump and has estimated the work to cost Rs 4 crore.
“The aged dump of Sonsoddo has been causing a nuisance for the locality and spoiling the land. The bio-mining concept can save 80 percent of the hillock. We will extract the recyclable waste and send the inert waste to the landfill,” said Ajay Jain of EES, adding that the tender for this work is yet to be floated.
Meanwhile, MMC Chairperson Babita Angle has accepted the concept on few conditions. She said, “The MMC has accepted the concept of the consultant provided we get another landfill site for the inert waste that will be produced during the segregation, and also a place to dump our daily waste and rejects. We are pushing for another site as we have got the present one after long time, and if the inert material comes in from the dump, it will get filled soon.”
Incidentally, sources stated that MMC councillors had entered the meeting with an agenda of opposing the consultant’s presentation.
