PANJIM: Colvale central jail will open its Industrial Block on May 30, the day of its first anniversary.
Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes said that the initiative by the Prisons Department is first of its kind in India that would house all the workshops for various arts & craft, tailoring, carpentry, paper making, candle making etc all under one roof.
Spread over an area of 1406 sq mtrs of built up space, the industrial block will also have a gallery section displaying some of the products manufactured by the jail inmates.
He said that the inmates would be given specialized training in all kinds of craftsmanship within the industrial Block in the jail.
Gomes said that a separate block for women prisoners would be opened in the Colvale jail, which he said, would ease the pressure on the Sada jail where women inmates are currently housed within the same jail but in a separate block isolated from the mail section.
The women block would be inaugurated by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Gomes informed.
Gomes said that the football ground developed within the jail premises is also first of its kind in the country reflecting best prison practices. The ground will shortly have a synthetic turf, he added.
All the inmates at Colvale Central Jail as well as the Sada Sub-jail will be handed over mementos to commemorate the occasion, Gomes informed.
