Inebriated car driver arrested over petty issue at Ponda petrol pump

Assaults the attendant calling him a ‘migrant’

PONDA: Ponda police arrested one Rupesh Naik from Khadpabandh over a petty issue which, however, escalated into a high drama at a petrol pump situated 30 metres from the Ponda Police station on Tuesday night.

Police informed that Naik, who was allegedly drunk, got into an argument with an attendant for asking him (Naik) to check the meter if it had turned to ‘zero’ before he started filling petrol into his car.

Infuriated that the attendant had only signaled him and not told him verbally, Naik alighted from his car and reportedly began abusing the attendant calling him a migrant and allegedly attacked him and also tore his shirt.

The attendant rushed to the toilet in order to protect himself but the accused followed him and broke open the door. All this time the accused is reported to have abused the attendant even shouting at the pump owner and questioning him why he had hired outsiders at the pump.

Noticing the brawl and the accused causing damages, the petrol pump owner Kausturb Kavlekar called up the police who came and arrested Naik. The police registered an offence under sections 504,506(ii), 323, 427, 448 IPC.

Naik also claimed to be a member of the Revolutionary Goans (RG) as he was attacking the attendant. This was however, later denied by RG Member Vishwesh Naik addressing a media briefing saying that the accused is not a RG Member.

“Revolutionary Goans never support violence. Our members are hard workers and are fighting through RTI. We are thinking of taking legal action against the accused (Naik) for claiming to be a RG Member,” said Vishwesh.
