‘Inflow of Russian, Ukrainian tourists has gone down’

PANJIM: Though he claimed that tourist inflow to Goa had increased by nearly 45 percent between 2012 and 2014, Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar on Tuesday admitted that the current crisis between Ukraine and Russia has led to fall in tourist arrivals from these two countries. Parulekar said that during the calendar year 2012, 27 lakh tourists arrived in Goa, 31 lakh arrived in 2013 and the number shot up to 40 lakh in 2014, including those that visited Goa for the Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St Francis Xavier during November 2014 to January, 2015.

“In the month of January, this year, the total inflow of tourist has been 3.42 lakh,” Parulekar said. For the year 2014, Russians dominated the foreign tourist arrivals at 97,510. This was followed by tourists from United Kingdom (29,089), Kazakhstan (4,855), Finland (1,996) and Ukraine (92).     
The tourism minister said that his department had organized a series of international and domestic road shows in order to improve the tourist inflow to the State.
