MARGAO: Stating that education is an important component of the journey of life, Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao said the All India Catholic Education Society in 2007 had decreed that education is recreation of humanities and society.
He was presiding over a function on Monday to felicitate meritorious students of the high schools, higher secondary schools and colleges run by the Diocesan Society of Education in Goa for their performance at their respective examinations held this year.
Thirty three students were felicitated for their performance at the SSC examinations, 12 at the HSS examinations and two at the college level.
The Archbishop said, “The four pillars of education are learning to know, learning to do, learning to be and learning to live with each other.” He asked the students to reach out with love and compassion and remind the teachers that the influence of a good teacher lasts a lifetime.
Chief guest Fr Joaquim Loiola Pereira, recalling a story of a child, who was a student at the Saligao seminary when he was teaching there, said there is a lot more than marks that a student can achieve or do to excel.
Students of Diocesan schools who topped the SSC examinations along with students who secured the highest marks in each subject were felicitated. Of these, seven students secured 100 marks in Social Studies.
Two students who secured cent percent marks in Science and Mathematics are Anushka Anil Naik of St John of the Cross HS, Sanquelim in Mathematics and Keelan John Batista from St Anthony’s HS, Majorda in Science.
Two students of St Andrew’s School, Vasco were felicitated for getting the highest grade at the examinations conducted by the Indian Council for Secondary Education, while Vincent Mateus Correia of St Thomas High School, Cansaulim was felicitated for securing highest marks in English amongst children with special needs.
All four students, who secured the highest marks in Science, Commerce, Arts and Vocational streams at Higher Secondary School examinations were from St Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Mapusa. They include Amisha Mahesh Sawant in Science, Shamik Karunakar Shetty in Commerce, Jemina Assumta Fernandes in Arts and Mitchell Mascarenhas in Vocational.
The two students felicitated for their performance at the university examinations were Linson Lynessa Lynette from St Xavier’s College, Mapusa and Kimberly Gresha Fernandes from Rosary College, Navelim.
