Fate of 685 candidates sealed, counting tomorrow

PANJIM: The fate of 685 candidates for the elections of 11 municipalities across the State was sealed on Sunday. The results will be declared at the respective taluka headquarters on Tuesday.
The average voter turnout in all 11 municipalities is 72.53, as against 62.38 in the municipal election of 2010. It is pertinent to note that almost 6,000 new voters have been added to the voters list this election. The number of voters of Valpoi municipality has increased by 11.28 per  cent, whereas the number has dropped for Canacona, Cuncolim and Curchorem municipalities.
Twenty-two more wards have also been added; five each in Mormugao, Margao and Mapusa, two each in Cuncolim, Curchorem and Bicholim and one in Quepem. Only one candidate, Prarthana Naik Gaonkar from Ward 5 of Canacona municipality, has been elected unopposed.
The elections were held peacefully from morning to evening in all municipalities, except Mormugao and Margao. In Margao, unknown people pelted stones at Margao MLA Digambar Kamat’s office at Pajifond and in Mormugao.
The highest voter turnout has been recorded in Pernem municipality; as per State Election Commission data, it has touched 87.88 per cent, whereas in 2010, it was 75.87 per cent. The lowest turnout was recorded in the Margao municipality, where it touched 66.35 per cent, whereas in the last polls, it was 56.41 per cent. 
The turnout for the other municipalities is: Mapusa – 75.29, Bicholim 85.42, Valpoi – 86.27, Mormugao – 68.76, Cuncolim – 72.04, Curchorem – 79.98, Quepem – 77.56, Canacona – 77.88 and Sanguem – 80.37.
Valpoi witnessed the highest female turnout at 89.14, followed by Pernem municipality at 88.21. The overall female turnout is 74.95, while the male turnout is 70.13.
