CANACONA: The government-appointed inquiry commission headed by a retired IAS officer visited the building collapse site at Canacona on Wednesday.
According to reliable sources, a three-member team headed by V K Jha reached Canacona on Wednesday afternoon and went straight to the site at Chaudi and inspected the site in the presence of Canacona mamlatdar Ravishekhar Nippanikar.
Consultant and ex-head of Veermata Jijabai Technical Institute, Mumbai, Manohar Gadgil and Head of Department, Civil Engineering, Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi-Ponda Dr Krishna S G Gupta were the other members of the committee who were also present, where one building of Ruby Residency collapsed on January 4 killing 31 and injuring over 16 workers.
The committee reportedly spent nearly two hours at the site, before leaving the taluka.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar ignoring the demand for a judicial probe pressed mostly by opposition, instead set up an inquiry committee headed by Jha, saying practical suggestions while probing the causes that led to the collapse of building and the persons responsible for the mishap is preferred over judicial probe.
The inquiry committee notified on January 12 has been asked to submit its preliminary report within 30 days and the final report within three months from its constitution.
According to sources, other than probing the illegalities angle leading to the collapse, the committee will also suggest ‘line of action’ at administrative level to avoid such accidents in future.
Parrikar while announcing the committee had said: “Based on this committee’s suggestions, government will give directions to municipal councils and panchayats to take all kinds of safeguards in approving projects and licensing procedures.”
