PORVORIM: Civil Supplies Minister Ravi Naik on Monday said in the Legislative Assembly that inquiry into the maggots-infested rice supplied to fair price shops (FPS) was on and that action will be taken against the culprits after receiving the inquiry report.
Replying to a starred question jointly tabled by MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira, Vijai Sardesai and Cruz Silva, the Minister said, “The infested food grains were found in 12 fair price shops in
Salcete, one FPS in Mormugao and one FPS in Sanguem Taluka.” The said infested foodgrains bags were taken back from FPS and also the infested stock present in Taluka Civil Supplies godown of Salcete and Mormugao was then treated with prophylactic (spraying) and curative (fumigation) treatment. After carrying out the treatment, stock was again distributed to FPS.
The Minister denied that substandard food grains were found in civil supplies godowns and supplied to FPS in the last five years.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said that the maggot-infested rice was found in fair price shops in May this year and demanded to know why inquiry was completed till date. He suspected a scam in the distribution of food grains to FPS.
