Inspection held to check illumination of Arlem-Nuvem bypass

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai criticised the government for delaying on this issue for years and said the 2.8 km stretch needed streetlights and these facilities much earlier and that he had repeatedly raised this issue in the previous Assembly sessions.

MARGAO: A joint inspection was held across the eastern bypass stretch between Arlem circle and Nuvem where assurances were given by the Power Department and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) that the much-needed streetlights would be set up soon.

It may be recalled that locals often complained about the problems of night visibility along this stretch and Herald had also reported about this issue.

During the inspection, the Executive Engineers of the Power Department, NHAI were present along with Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, Margao Municipal Council (MMC) councillors, Traffic Police and locals, these issues were highlighted.

Sardesai urged the Traffic police to take action against the dumping of chicken waste by the road-side and said this was causing problems for the farmers who have fields on either sides of the highway.

He also asked the highway officials to create vendor ways on this stretch, which would allow vehicles to park and purchase the produce of the farmers, without causing any traffic issues

While the government officials said tenders had been issued to put up the streetlights, Sardesai said the authorities should also install crash barriers on the side of the road as well as solar blinkers.

He criticised the government for delaying on this issue for years and said the 2.8 km stretch needed streetlights and these facilities much earlier and that he had repeatedly raised this issue in the previous Assembly sessions.
