PANJIM: The concerns regarding the safety of buildings in the city do not only pertain to their precarious state but also the risk of fire, since the Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services has time and again reminded the builders/society/owners concerned to put in place fire safety equipment.
During regular inspections, fire officials detected that a number of government buildings, colleges, residential and commercial buildings besides older heritage structures are without fire prevention equipment or even basic ladders. Despite several reminders from the department recommending fire safety measures, the institutions have shown an apathetic attitude, even as most of these are fitted with first aid and fire extinguishers only.
According to records, till August 4, 2014, the fire officials have inspected 35 schools, hospitals and government offices/buildings in the capital, while about 100 inspections are pending. The inspections of structures are carried out almost every month.
The department has recently sent letters to the respective owners/builders to comply with the recommendations within stipulated time, failing which the former will declare the buildings unsafe.
“We have been issuing NOCs for high rise buildings, including commercial establishments, which have to be renewed every year. But we don’t find it happening. It is not one-time NOC. Renewal is mandatory so that inbuilt fire safety arrangements are kept in proper working condition. The onus lies on the builder/society,” Director of Fire and Emergency Services Ashok Menon said.
