MARGAO: The insulated trucks that transport fish to the SGPDA wholesale market have been banned from parking inside the market premises by the SGPDA. However, that hasn’t stopped them from parking on either side of the road from La Grace Hotel to the wholesale market.
While locals have no issue with the parked trucks, the trucks are causing a nuisance by discharging ice water from their holding tank onto the roadside. The water emits a foul smell of rotten fish which affects the people of Madel. Local Milagris Fernandes said the authorities must Stop the trucks from discharging their water on the road and into the fields.
Sanjeev Raiturkar, a resident of Fatorda whose complaint in the Pollution Control Board had exposed the high level of pollution in the wholesale fish market, said the place has become disgusting. “I can’t understand why the health department, Municipality and SGPDA are not taking action. Is it not a health hazard? “, he questioned. “This is why un-insulated vehicles should not be allowed in the State and insulated ones should be strictly monitored for where they dispose their waste water. The health minister has to take immediate action and stop these vehicles from causing a nuisance to the locals. ” he said.
