The hunt to nab fishing vessels from Mangalore in the Arabian sea brought to the fore the fitness of the coastal police interceptor boats. One of the interceptor boats developed a technical snag during the hunt and had to be towed back to the Betul fishing jetty with the help of one of the seized fishing vessels.
When contacted, a senior coastal police official said the police boat developed a snag and had to be towed back. In an apparent bid to downplay the incident, an official said the technical snag was immediately attended to and rectified.
Incidentally, the coastal interceptors in the past were of no help to the boat owners to track down outside vessels fishing in Goa’s territorial waters for want of batteries. A boat owner maintained that the coastal police interceptors should be fit at all times when their primary objective is to track down enemy ships coming close to the shore.
