PANJIM: Police sub inspector Sudin Redkar, infamous for his aggression while on duty, is now entangled in another controversy.
Facing a departmental inquiry for assaulting a person last month, the officer has been slapped with a second inquiry after a goof-up in another matter was exposed to police brass.
Redkar, currently posted at GRP, not only conducted an inquiry into allegations against him but also gave himself a clean chit.
In March, Redkar, who was then posted at Sanguem police station, was accused of custodial assault on one Amit Naik. The man was taken into custody by Sanguem Police in connection with a non-bailable warrant issued by JMFC Pune.
He was allegedly assaulted by a group of people including policemen following which the arrested man’s wife lodged a formal complaint at Sanguem police station naming Abhijit Desai, Ulhas Gawas, Prakash Bhagat, Somesh Dessai, PSI Redkar and constable Somesh Dessai for the offence. Interestingly, Redkar himself investigated the complaint filed against him and gave himself a clean chit.
In his report, the ‘inquiry officer’ mentioned that Naik was arrested by constable Dessai with the help of the people as no other staff was available to arrest him.
The report also states that since Naik was resisting arrest, he had to be forcible taken into the car and brought to the police station for legal action.
“During his arrest, and since he was resisting the arrest a minimum force was used by the public to push him in the car. In the process his face hit the head rest of the car… at no point of time he was assaulted neither by the public or by the police and all legal procedures was followed as per the law and no police action is warranted in the matter,” he stated.
Redkar was recently transferred to GRP in connection with another matter wherein a video showing him kicking and abusing a local – while conducting site panchanana of a drowning incident – surfaced on social media.
Police higher ups have now appointed DySP Sunita Sawant to conduct both departmental inquiries against him.
