IRB constable saves woman from jumping off Zuari bridge

VASCO: Sagar Chawhan, an IRB police constable attached to the Vasco traffic cell, prevented a woman from jumping off the Zuari Bridge in a suicide bid on Saturday morning.

According to information, a 42-year-old woman from Goa Velha planned to commit suicide by jumping off the Zuari Bridge at around 9 am on Saturday. Her 19-year-old daughter, who accompanied her to the site, repeatedly requested her not to commit suicide. However, the mother ignored her daughter’s pleas.
As the woman was about to jump from the bridge, Chawhan, who was deployed at the Agassaim side of the bridge, immediately rushed over to the woman and physically restrained her.
At the same time, Surendra Madkaikar, who is the personal secretary of Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar, passed by the bridge. Anticipating trouble, he stopped his car and helped Chawhan take the woman and her daughter to the nearby Agassaim police station.
Agassaim police, while investigating the case, learnt that the woman, who was staying in London, came down to Goa with her daughter on Saturday. Upset with some family issue, she decided to commit suicide.
Meanwhile, the Vasco traffic cell has decided to recommend Chawhan’s name for a bravery award to the police headquarters. The recommendation will be sent through the Superintendent of Police, Traffic Cell, South Goa, informed Vasco traffic cell PI Sudesh Narvekar.
