MAPUSA: Several parts of Bardez taluka have been facing water shortage and irregular water supply for the last few days due to various reasons including the stoppage of water supply from the Amthane Dam to the Assonora Water Treatment Plant.
The areas affected and facing water crisis include Camurlim, Colvale, Mapusa, Porvorim, Saligao, Assagao, Anjuna- Caisua, Tivim and few other villages.
A PWD official informed that the problem was due to an issue at the Assonora treatment plant due to which there was no water supply on Monday and hence water could not be supplied. Earlier, there was an electricity supply issue.
However, the official has assured that local resident would be provided with water tankers.
Over shortage of water, few residents from Verla Canca took a morcha to the PWD office. They questioned the officials and demanded to improve the water supply be as soon as possible.
Sandeep, a resident of Porvorim complained of not receiving water supply for the last three days.
“The local PWD Engineer informed us they do not have water at the Porvorim tank as the Assonora Water Treatment Plant was not releasing water. We are without water,” he said.
Sources revealed that the problem of water shortage was prevalent in Bardez due to the irregular power and stoppage of raw water from Amthane Dam to the Water Treatment Plant at Assonora.
High turbidity in the water supplied to the plant from the Tillari Dam was making it difficult for treatment and hence currently the plant was pumping water from Amthane Dam. The water treatment plant has a capacity to treat around 92 MLD however the plant has been overburdened.
A senior PWD official informed that this entire issue of water shortage in Bardez was caused due to stoppage of raw water from Amthane Dam on Monday. However, after the intervention of the WRD Minister raw water supply was resumed on Tuesday evening.
He assured that there would be normal water supply by Tuesday night
