In a deeply concerning escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict, the armed wing of Hamas initiated “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” firing a staggering 5,000 rockets in what they referred to as their “first strike” lasting 20 minutes. Israel responded by declaring a ‘state of war’ and launching airstrikes on the Gaza strip, pledging retaliation for the ferocious rocket attack claimed by Hamas.
The skies over Israel were pierced by over 5,000 rockets as sirens blared across the nation during a festive holiday morning. Israel’s defense forces reported an infiltration by Hamas militants, whom they categorize as terrorists. Startling visuals from Israel depicted the use of paragliders in the attack and firing at passing cars on roads.
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized that Hamas had made a grave mistake by initiating a war against Israel. He declared the Israel Defense Forces’ readiness for war and cited widespread rocket fire into Israeli territory from Gaza, along with terrorists infiltrating various entry points.
Hamas, in response, launched “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” and claimed responsibility for the massive rocket barrage, aiming to convey that there would be consequences for their actions. Hamas militant leader Mohamed Deif stated in a pre-recorded speech that they intended to end the recklessness without accountability.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government stated that Hamas would pay a heavy price for its actions, while Netanyahu convened a meeting of security chiefs. Sirens continued to blare in Jerusalem and across Israel as numerous impact points were reported in southern and central regions. Civilians were urged to seek shelter, especially those near the Gaza strip who were advised to stay home.
The escalating violence occurred following heightened tensions, with Israel closing its borders to Gazan workers. Hamas had previously stated that it was time to end the occupation, citing ongoing Israeli actions, especially at the holy site of Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.
This year, the conflict has resulted in casualties on both sides, with 247 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, and two foreigners losing their lives. These numbers include fighters and civilians.
