VASCO: The State government’s decision to cancel the driving licence and impose heavy fines on those found overtaking on the Zuari Bridge may have brought some road discipline among the commuters, but the move has affected the smooth flow of traffic as some vehicles were found reportedly commuting slowly on Tuesday and due to the rough road conditions.
To ease traffic congestion at the Cortalim junction, the Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho in a recent statement said that driving licences of those motorists found overtaking on the Zuari Bridge would be cancelled.
The minister’s statement has evoked mixed response from the commuters.
Sachin, a commuter travelling from Panjim said, “The decision to cancel the driving licences and impose heavy fines on those motorists for overtaking on the Zuari Bridge is good. But in case of emergency or for that matter if an ambulance that wants to rush the patient to a hospital, will it be allowed to overtake the other vehicles?”
Welcoming the decision, another commuter Rishi said, “Emphasis should be laid on following the rules, only then the traffic congestion problem will be solved. It is a fact the citizens are expected to follow the rules but proper infrastructure such as good roads needs to be in place. I feel the bad road stretch from Agassaim to Verna slope is the main cause for the slow movement of traffic as overtaking cannot be considered as the main reason for traffic congestion.”
