MARGAO: The body of Jaffar Kanvalli, who drowned in the abandoned quarry at San Jose de Areal on May Day, was recovered by the Fire Service personnel this evening after it floated due to natural causes as a drowned body floats generally after 24 hours of death.
The Fire Services personnel had searched for the body from around 6.30 pm on May 1 till around 3 am the next day. While initially they tried to retrieve the body with hook, later on they used night vision glasses and dived deep to search for the body.
However, as the fire services personnel were not successful Navy divers were pressed into service on May 2 at around 7 pm and they too could not trace the body despite searching for nearly 5 hours.
Finally, yesterday afternoon the police stopped looking for the body and waited for it to rise naturally and that is what happened this evening.
The three youngsters who had accompanied Jaffar to the quarry on the fateful day were summoned and kept at the Maina Curtorim police station the whole day for questioning.
Meanwhile, police revealed that the body has been preserved for now and will be handed over for post mortem tomorrow morning.
