PANJIM: The Prisons Department has suspended a jail guard for dereliction of duty after a video of three rape accused being forced to do sit-ups in nude at Central Jail Colvale were circulated on WhatsApp.
The suspended jail guard has been identified as Vilas Naik. “He has been asked to report to the head office until his suspension period. A detailed investigation will be carried out and the concerned officer is directed to submit the report within one week,” sources told Herald.

The three inmates, accused of raping minors at Colva beach last month, were remanded to judicial custody last Friday. In the 53-second video, the three accused have been stripped naked and made to do sit-up by some other prisoners, whose identities are being established. It is also learnt that inmates have recorded the video and circulated on various WhatsApp groups.
The incident is another example of use of mobiles phones in the jail. Sources said the video is probably recorded between last Friday and Monday. However no mobile phone was found after a check was launched in the wake of the video leak. Further investigation is underway by the department.
