Januz probe to be handed over to CB

The move comes after Health Minister’s request to DGP to transfer the case to Crime Branch; Vishwajit promises Januz’s family members that such incident will never take place in the State

PANJIM: The Goa Police on Monday will hand over the probe into the missing of footballer Januz Gonsalves’ body to Crime Branch (CB), two days after Agassaim police registered a case of negligence against head of forensic medicine Dr Edmund Rodrigues and two staffers namely Machindra Jalmi and Prakash Narvekar.
The move comes after Health Minister Vishwajit Rane personally wrote to Director General of Police Muktesh Chander requesting him to transfer the case to the Crime Branch.
“We are readying papers for transfer of case, and the probe will be handed over to the Crime Branch on Monday,” Chander informed Herald.
Earlier, Rane confirmed that he had written to DGP to move the investigation from the local police station to the Crime Branch to probe the criminal negligence angle and foul play. “Hence it should be done by a senior officer under the Crime Branch,” he said.
The Health Minister on Sunday morning met Januz’s family members and promised that such incident will never take place in the State.
“I promise such incidents will never take place in Goa. We will pursue the inquiry and take necessary action. Need prayers and support from the people to take these things forward and let us all unite in prayer for Januz and his family,” he informed reporters after the meeting.
The HoD of the forensic medicine and his two staff were on Saturday suspended soon after the grieving families were shocked to know that the 24-year-old Januz’s body was disposed of by the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) along with three unclaimed bodies.
