PANJIM: The man who defined Jazz in India ~ Joe Pereira referred to as Jazzy Joe passed away at his Bandra residence, Friday morning. He was 86 and leaves behind his daughter Pamela and son Christopher.
Born in Calangute in 1927, Joe learned the violin at the age of eight and by 15 he was versatile on the clarinet and the saxaphone which he learnt under his cousin Sebastian D’Souza.
In 1941, Pereira began performing, when he was just 14, in a band in Lahore’s Stiffler’s Hotel along with his cousin, the legendary Sebastian D’Souza.
After spending much of his career in Lahore, Delhi and Calcutta, Pereira returned to Bombay.
