MARGAO: Summer calls for judicious use of water, but a huge
quantity of the precious commodity went waste at Mugalli in Sao
Jose de Areal village on Saturday evening after a JCB damaged an
underground pipeline while working on laying of a sewage line.
In fact, the entire low lying field was submerged by the
overflowing water from the damaged line, literally converting the
area into a lake.
It was only after a long delay that the PWD managed to plug the
flow by closing a valve along the Selaulim water pipeline.
Information revealed that the JCB was working at the site to
excavate mud for a chamber when it hit the underground water
pipeline supplying water from the main Selaulim line to the
Mugalli area. After the damage to the pipe, the result was a huge
water fountain. Water gushed into the adjoining fields.
PWD officials said work on repairing the damaged pipeline was in
progress, but admitted that lakhs of litres of precious water had
gone waste.
Local residents, who assembled at the site, felt both PWD and
Sewage agencies should coordinate to prevent such incidents and
loss to the exchequer. “The incident could have been avoided if
Sewage officials had coordinated with the PWD before taking up the
excavation”, remarked a local resident.
