PANJIM: The crucial V K Jha Commission of Inquiry report, which investigated the Canacona building disaster that occurred on January 4 killing 31 workers and injuring several others, would be tabled in the forthcoming Goa Assembly session likely to begin from July 22.
The Commission, which recently quizzed Sports Minister and Canancona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar in connection with the incident, would be submitting its report to the government in mid-July.
“The inquiry is in progress and we will submit the final report by mid-July. The State Legislative Assembly, where the report would be tabled, is the first authority which will know the findings of the commission,” retired IAS officer, V K Jha told reporters on Tuesday.
Refusing to divulge any further details, Jha said that more people, including those who have been held responsible for the accident, have and would be quizzed.
Ruby Residency, a five-storey under-construction building, collapsed killing 31 people. The Commission set up and notified in January was initially directed to submit the preliminary report by mid-February and three months to submit a final report, the deadline having expired on April 11. A further three months’ extension was granted on the Commission’s request, for submission of the final report.
A senior government official said that the inquiry will be independent of the police investigation conducted in the collapse case. “The inquiry commission will go through the documents and use its own wisdom to fix individual and constitutional responsibility of this disaster,” the official said.
The committee will establish causes of the collapse and recommend measures that will help government to formulate guidelines for future. It will also look into any other issues that may need further investigation.
The commission will fix responsibility, both individual and institutional, for the building collapse and examine other buildings that are structurally unstable.
