Joint inspection conducted of accident-prone Consua junction

VASCO: The Mormugao traffic police along with Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and other government officials on Saturday conducted a joint site inspection at Consua junction following a fatal accident at the spot.

Also it was decided to deploy traffic police at this busy junction to regulate traffic during peak hours. Besides Vas, Mormugao Traffic Cell PI Shailesh Narvekar, government officials, panchayat and other were present during site inspection. It was decided to immediately implement preventive measures at the Consua junction after Francisco D’Silva (61) was killed and his son injured in an accident on Friday.

Vas said that he has already asked traffic police to act against all the heavy vehicles found parked along the national highway as part of preventive measures. He said that the villagers have demanded to install traffic signal also to put rumblers or speed breakers at the Consua junction and that he will take up these issues with the government. 

According to Vas, traffic police cell expressed its inability to deploy traffic police throughout the day due to staff shortage and that he will request the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to give additional staff to both, police station and the traffic cell. 

Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira said that the village panchayat had written to the police to act against heavy vehicles parked along the highway and to fit traffic signals at the Consua junction as the road connects villages of Nauta and Consua on either sides and people are crossing the road risking their lives.

Vasco Traffic Cell PI Shailesh Narvekar said that he had already written to the competent authorities to install rumblers and speed breakers at the junction. He said police are regularly challaning vehicles found parked in a haphazard manner and along the highways and posing risk to motorists.  He also appealed to motorists to drive slowly and cautiously and to follow all traffic rules to avoid accidents.
