VASCO: Following the furore over the death of renowned tiatrist Marcelino de Betim in a road accident near the vegetable market, a joint meeting was held regarding the traffic problems in the area.
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida along with Traffic police officials, Mamltadar and councillors were present. The need to curb alleged illegal encroachments at the FL Gomes road and implement measures to streamline parking, traffic movement near the market place to avoid any future accidents were deliberated on at the meeting held in Deputy Collector Paresh Faldessai’s office.
The issue of lack of space for parking and walking in the area was also highlighted.
Almeida put the onus on Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), pointing out that it’s supposed to look into the encroachment related matters and that it should immediately solve the issues in the public’s interest.
MMC Chairperson Nandadeep Raut said the municipal staff has been actively implementing the anti-encroachment drive in the Vasco vegetable market in the last three days. Raut also expressed his condolence to the family of late Marcelino Noronha.
He added that the municipality will impose a fine on violations and that the encroachments from the footpath and vegetable market will be removed soon.
“We are going to shift some vegetable, fruit vendors tentatively near the shuttle service area and modern market area” Raut added.
Dy Collector Faldessai informed the encroachments will be cleared and the the illegal sheds built by vendors will be removed and that the vendors will be shifted to the places identified by MMC.
Further, Almeida and Raut demanded that the work on the flyover, be expedited on a war footing as it will not only help in reducing accidents but will also ease Vasco’s traffic congestion.
